New this year is The Education Stage!
Explore workshops throughout the day to go deeper on the music. It will also be a great way to keep the fun going between sets!
3:00pm - Clave Connection
Join Joel McCullough and Sahar Malik from Starsign in a fun interactive master class exploring how Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and New Orleans Brass Band traditions are connected by the common heartbeat known as clave.
Joel is the founder, main composer, and keyboard wizard behind Starsign’s epic jazz-funk-fusion grooves. Sahar plays percussion.
4:30pm - Country Blues and Beyond
5:30pm - Call and Response Music
With over 15 years of playing jazz and blues in New Orleans, Nathan Rivera, of the dynamic duo Nathan & Jessie, brings real life experiences and insightful lessons from the Crescent City.
6:45pm - The Second Line Tradition of New Orleans
In early 2011, Euphoria Brass Band began appearing on the street for no other reason but to bring sweet brass band sounds to loosen the hips of unsuspecting pedestrians in San Diego and Los Angeles counties. Sparked by a duo of New Orleans post-Katrina transplants and embraced by San Diego’s horn and percussion royalty, this workshop will give you a fuller understanding of this unique American tradition and an opportunity to join the procession.
Kids and families will also have educational music activities and crafts to enjoy throughout the day!
11:00am - 12:00pm - Story Strings
Learn more about the history of jazz in a read-aloud picture book session. Children of all literacy levels can then practice their own storytelling with some furry friends!
12:00pm - 1:00pm - Crafty Cats
Jazz-inspired arts and crafts for young hipsters.
1:30pm - 3:00pm - BeBop (Bounce) House
Children (ages 7 and under) can bebop to their own tempo!
3:00pm - 5:00pm - Music Together
Caregivers and their young ones are invited to a “woodshed” music making session. Instruments provided!
3:30pm - 5:00pm - Face Painting

5:45pm - 6:45pm - Crafty Cats / Parade Ribbons
